Red Dead Revolver - Glitchy, Frusterating, but awesome.

I just recently finished Red Dead Revolver for Original Xbox. The game isn't perfect, and proves itself to be pretty challenging, but still managed to be a ton of fun. Anyone looking for a good budget game for original xbox should check it out. I'm really excited for the sequel now too. Check out these clips from me playing RDR on JTV last weekend.

  1. Hey Matt!
Which game do you think is the better Western - Red Dead Revolver or Gun?
I'm just curious cause I've heard so many good things about GUN and Red Dead Redemption is on the horizont.
    greetings,

  2. Hey Hans,

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a chance to play Gun yet. I'd like to pick it up though. From what I've heard, Gun seems to be the more technically sound/quality game. But RDR is awesome and I really had a good time with it, despite it's flaws.

  3. Dude I loved Red Dead Revolver, so much fun and had a ton of replay value to keep replaying through to unlock all the mutiplayer characters. For a while this was the top multiplayer game in my crew. I played Gun as well and it was a fun game but a lot more repetative and had no real replay value to me. RDR had a very linear structure where Gun was more open world but Gun just had you doing a lot of side quests mini game things like poker tournaments and herding cattle that kept pulling you away from the main game.

I'm really looking forward to Red Dead Redemption, I've got a soft spot for western games. Although, Call of Jaurez was a complete failure and should never be spoken of.

  4. awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, Ryan. I'm excited for redemption as well. So, did you ever have a problem with the difficulty level of RDR? I have to be honest, I almost quit the game several times because of how difficult it gets at some points. It didn't help that I had to deal with 360 emulator glitches either.

But fact that I still enjoyed it so much, despite all of that, says alot about how good this game is.

  5. It was pretty much glitch-free but it wasn't an emulator so I don't really know what kinds of problems that caused. I know emulator versions never seem to be quite right though. I actually really liked the difficulty. It's always refreshing to play games that take some time to beat and many frustrated continues. Once you get the last handgun (the scorpion?) you're pretty overpowered for the next playthrough but beating the levels with the requirements to unlock stuff added a nice level of difficulty that I liked.

  6. Yeah. Now that I look back at it, I'm glad it did kind of kick my ass. I just felt that much more accomplished when I finally finished it. You don't really get that feeling with modern games anymore.

  7. No you do not. In trying to appeal to a wider audience and create a more visceral storytelling experience (I guess?) developers have made dying a thing of the past. Remember when you'd have a finite number of lives in a game? For as much as I loved Bioshock there was very little incentive to actually get good at the game. Dying was completely pointless except to slightly inconvenience you and have you be moved 3 rooms over with all of your ammo and weapons intact.
