Are realistic graphics all that important?

I've been looking forward to Borderlands ever since it's initial feature in GameInformer. Four-player co-op and endless weapon customization are just a few things that have me excited about this game.

At first I was surprised at Gearbox's recent announcement to completely change the art style. But I have to say, I'm really impressed and even more psyched for the game now after taking a closer look at the new concept art and screenshots. The new style seems to be a fusion of traditional cel-shading and the illustration-ish style that made the latest installment of Prince of Persia so unique.

Realistic graphics in games have never really been an important factor for me. So any aesthetic risk developers take to make their game standout amongst the crowd is a plus.

What do you guys think? Are realistic graphics necessary for you to get sucked into a game world? Is it something you consider when buying games?

  1. Depends on the game. Some certainly benefit from it, like say a Gears of War while other games work better in less traditional styles like you mentioned with Prince of Persia or even Madworld. I think it all depends on the world and feel you're trying to create. I'm looking forward to Borderlands and hopes it's a fun game but to be honest I think a more realistic 'gritty' feeling art style would serve the game better. Granted this is only based on a few screenshots from each of the two styles they've had.

  2. i agree that art style should be decided on a case-by-case basis when it comes to games. a game like Assassin's Creed would not feel the same if it was cel-shaded and Okami would definitely feel out of place had it been given the hyper-realistic treatment. thankfully, games are diverse enough that there will always be something for everyone.

all that aside, i prefer tight gameplay and controls to eye candy.

  3. Ya graphics are secondary for me, it really depends on what a game is goin for. Once i figure out the story line, characters, controls and overall playability. Then i look at the graphics and make a judgment.
